I can’t self-soothe. Why should my son have to?

Sometime between 7pm (when he went down for bed) and 11pm Camper got sick.  It’s really sad, honestly.  This is his first time with a cold!  His nose is crusty and sore, his breathing sounds like a baby walrus (and I know, because I saw Growing Up Walrus yesterday.  I heart animal planet.), and he’s just miserable.  When I woke up with his at about 3am I BRILLIANTLY tried to squidgy his nose (hrm…also known as bulb syringe-ing out his nose) which made him scream at me like I had taken away all his pacifiers and given them to the gypsies.  Dad came in and Camper was all smiles for him, looking over his shoulder at me like, “Why does the crazy woman always get night duty?”

I rolled up a towel and stuck it under his mattress so that his head was a little more elevated.  My Mom/husband? found the vaporizer and set it up in his room.  And now I’m sitting vigil.  I know that the best thing for him is sleep closely followed by food.  So I think it’ll mean that we hang out in his room a lot today, me hoping my laptop battery doesn’t die, popping the paci back in when he gets restless and starts to rub the hair off the back of his head by squirming back and forth.  And then there will be the bottles.  I wonder if I should hold off on solid food to make sure he gets the maximum amount of liquid today?  I’ll probably let him call the shots…if he seems awake and alert maybe we’ll just do fruits and veggies today.  Any advice?

So yes.  Time for some work, maybe a shower?  At some point today?  And sleeping Camper.  Poor little Camper!

Erin, That saline spray is what the Dr. told Sara to use, of course he is going to hate it, but after he will be much clearer up dee nose. Also there is a baby vicks rub that did seem to help Cutter. That Dr. did say not to give tylenol for low-grade fevers, that is actually how the body kills off germs. Low grade is below 100. We did go with the food more than the bottle, just cause they cannot suck as well with that snot trouble. The food is also a source of hydration, so unless he does not take any bottles or food, do not get too worried. A cold sucks, for sure, YOU need to take some extra care of yourself, it is a hard few days ahead. Oh yeah, if it gets too bad take him into the bathroom with the shower running on hot, and let him breathe that steam for a half hour or so. Also the bath with vapor stuff in it did calm Cutter down, and it relaxes you some too. Good Luck, and try not to worry, you will get thru this, and he will too. I Love you all, P

Oh yeah I also forgot to tell you about the diapers, it is another way to make sure he is not dehydrating, keep an eye on how much pee you are seeing, and poop too, sorry I forgot about that. If there are problems, as always the diaper is the first to know. Any extra pulling on the ears is cause for a Dr. visit, all the snot plugs the sinus and can cause ear infections. This is all worst case stuff, he is healthy and should not have trouble bouncing back, you well, that could be another story. Love you P
