Hey, thanks to Angella over at Dutch Blitz, here is an interview all about ME! Read on and join in, I’ll think up some questions just for you, too! (Thanks Angella.)
1. You told me that you want to go to Kenya on a safari. Where else would you like to travel to?
Lately I’ve been looking at Turkey. Not the usual vacation spot, but I think it would be absolutely beautiful, full of things and food and people I haven’t encountered before. Well, that’s not true. I’ve met people from Turkey. When I lived in England I knew a few people from there, but was never invited over for some good Turkish food.
Other than that, I’d love to go back to England. I’ve also got some friends in Spain, Italy and France (my friends in France are a couple from Italy and Chile and they had a baby about a year ago, so I would LOVE to see them!) I have an uncle in Germany, one in Korea, and my husband is of Irish descent. So Europe, basically.
HOWEVER, I REALLY want to go to Iceland. Why? The puffins. More accurately, the pufflings, who when hatched, need saving if they are to survive. I wouldn’t ever eat one though. Too sad!
And then…since Iceland is a protectorate? maybe? colony (do they still use that word?) of Denmark, and since I have a friend there too, Denmark it is! Phew. I need to save some money.
2. If you could have any career (outside of being a Mom), what would it be?
I’m actually about to start a master’s degree in library sciences. My dream at the moment is to find a nice university and become a research librarian. I’ve also considered publishing, but my year as an editor left a lot to be desired. Then again, if I could edit for actual writers and not self-indulgent, selfish, naive so-called adults, I think it could go rather well. We will see. I do plan on having a career again one day, but right now I’m enjoying staying home with Bubby.
3. Are you planning on having any more children? If so, what is your ideal number of kids?
Right now I can’t imagine having more than one. Seriously, I fantasize about sleeping through the night. All the way through the night. Pregnancy was very difficult for me, and I have some medical issues we’re sorting out before we try to have another baby. Hopefully knowing what’s wrong will improve my experience the next time around. Until then, it’s Mirena for us. However, when I think about when Bubby was born and how small he was, I start to think I’m not done yet. We will probably have one more naturally and then we really want to adopt. It’s a something that is really important to us, even more so than traveling. But again, the sad truth is that with all the babies that need somewhere to go it still costs money, something we don’t have at the moment. Our ideal number is 4: 2 naturally 2 adopted, all our kids. Writing that out it sounds like a lot of kids…I’ve never really realized that before.
4. What prompted you to start blogging, and what keeps you going?
I actually started blogging when I started dating John, my now husband. He had a blog that I stalked and tried to stop reading as we were dating. I told him that I was getting to know him “artificially” by reading about the last year of his life by reading it instead of asking him about it. I soon got over that, though.
My first posts were few and far between (see my one an only entry for February, 2007), and at times I thought I’d give it up entirely. Somewhere along the way it became a lifeline. I really loved the community aspect, keeping in touch with family and friends, and having a place to record all the funny/odd things that happened to me. Now it’s almost a kind of therapy. I rant about things, write questions I have, get advice, give advice, I found a wide community of other SAHM’s that can understand what it feels like to be so tired. So so tired. It’s just good to know that I can write about how my kid FINALLY pooped and have an audience that understands my relief. I moved all the way across the country and didn’t miss a beat. The Internet was still just where I left it. PLUS, I love that feeling when someone I like to read updates. So I try to update often enough to make people who read ME excited, too. (If someone doesn’t update their blog for two weeks or so, I’ll usually take them off my to-read list. Unless I love them and have to be outrageously patient.)
5. If you are going to have a snack, do you reach for the salty or the sweet?
It depends. John loves to bake, so we usually have brownies or cookies sitting around just begging me to eat them. But I also LOVE ruffles potato chips, cheddar and sour cream. With a Pepsi. I think I actually enjoy beverages more than food. I love going to a restaurant and getting Pepsi or Dr. Pepper in a paper cup (or one of those thick, plastic ones like Pizza Hut used to have) and then eating something that makes me thirsty for it. My new favorite is Bennigan’s Southwest Egg Rolls. The waitress (who threw an appetizer plate all over John during our dinner) told us they actually order them and get them frozen from somewhere. If I could find them I would probably never eat anything else again. Just a plate full of Egg Rolls and then two sodas, with a straw, medium amount of ice. (For the record, I have not had soda in one week and I’m pretty sure it was the secret to the 5 lbs. I’ve lost. Oh how I miss soda.)
So! If you would like to join in on the interviewing party, follow these directions:
1. Leave me a comment saying, “Interview me”. Adding that you liked my answers above will win you bonus points and virtual Diet Coke/coffee and chocolate. Or a butt-squeeze, if that is your thing.
2. I will respond by emailing you five questions. I get to pick the questions.
3. You will update your blog with the answers to the questions.
4. You will include this explanation and an offer to interview someone else in the same post.
5. When others comment asking to be interviewed, you will ask them five questions.
If you are too shy (or busy, or cool, etc.) to play, why don’t you ask me that burning question about me that has been eating at you? Those of you already playing can ask too. I’ll answer your questions in the comments so that you can get finally kill your curiosity. This could be fun. And possibly, dangerous.
