Quack Quack

Monday, November 30th, 2009

So Camper started screaming today.  Not like…mad screaming.  Like,

“HEY I CAN MAKE A LOT OF NOISE IF I JUST DO THIS? CAN YOU HEAR ME? ISN”T THIS GREAT????”

screaming.

He’s always been a bit of a quiet baby.  I mean, he could cry with the best of them, but even if he heard another child run by screaming like a crazy person he would imitate him quietly.  Instead of the AHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!! he heard he’d emit a small “ahhhhhh” in response.  Then he’d flash us a smile like, “Didn’t I do that CUTE-LY?  Wasn’t that a CUTE yell?”  And I’d say “Yes, that was a very cute yell.”

No more people.  I’m not sure what switched in his brain but tonight during his SUPA BUSY time after dinner he ran around, walking in short spurts from me to the couch, from the couch to me, from me to Dad, etc.  and SCREAMING.

It was pretty interesting.

Another amusing thing this holiday season has been his incessant quacking.  Ducks are his best animal.  He can say both duck AND quack, and aside from some confusion in the tub with a rubber ducky that has a pig’s head (yeah, are you trying to fry my kid’s brain?) he was really good at quacking whenever he saw a duck.  The last week, however, he’s been quacking non stop.  I finally figured out that he’s quacking when he sees ducks, penguins OR angels.  Yup.  Pretty much anything with wings.

I’m so cool…

Rainy Halloween

Saturday, October 31st, 2009

Camper’s SECOND Halloween.  Yes, last year he was an owl and this year he got to be TWO things.  First a dragon at the church party last night, and tonight a monkey at his Halloween playdate with his little red-headed friendwho’sagirl. (Two redheads together is very, very cute.  I think I should ban myself from saying very, very cute again in this post but I know I won’t be able to stop.)  I was crazy running around all day.  First I had a piano lesson to teach in the morning (we played a LOT of duets, which is the MOST fun) and then I had a class at church that I really wanted to go to.  My mother volunteered to stay home with Camper as he napped so that I could go and enjoy some adult interaction…and I really really did.  After I got home I got to help a friend with some computer needs, which was actually a fulfilling experience.  No one has asked for my help in that capacity for a long time, and it was really refreshing to realize that I might not be working outside the home right now, but I still have some skills.  And I learned some new things, too.  Just a few resources available online that I had NO IDEA about and how to download them in different ways.

After all THAT Camper and I headed off to our Trick or Treating playdate.  I met our friends through a play group at the lcoal hospital and I was EXCITED when they invited us over for Halloween.  I LOVE making holidays special, and since I kind of failed at having Camper-aged children at his birthday party, I thought it’d be fun to see him go Trick or Treating with someone his own age.  And yes, they were adorable.  It was raining, so we mostly just answered the door, talked and ate good, good food (very delicious) but we did hit a couple of houses to get the full experience.

What? You say you need evidence of their cuteness?

Ok.

And here’s some of their cuteness from the pumpkin patch last week.

And no, it wasn’t a baby date.  We had another little boy there with us as well, but all my pics with all three of them show their faces.  But aren’t baby friends adorable?

Ok.  I’ll stop using that word and go to bed now.

PS I ate too much today.

Just a Beef. Not a Lo.

A few weeks ago John and I found a yak…a real yak…(two of them, actually) about 10 minutes from our house.  We were looking for a restaurant that we Urban Spooned, and WA LA.  Yak.

Just chilling on a yak farm.  Tonight after a long, full day of stuff, we decided to go and look for another mysterious large animal- the beefalo.

I remember finding the beefalo farm somewhere around here when I was in high school, and navigated us there with the help of a phonecall home and the iphone.  When we arrived, the Bubbs had fallen asleep in the backseat, and John and I sat pondering what seemed to just be a beef.  Not a beefalo.  We looked at the cow.  The cow looked at us.  And then we moved on.  I wonder if the farm still has beefalo, or if they are long gone.  I’d LOVE to see a baby one.  I’m going to have to investigate this further, and try and supply you with real local pictures of our friendly neighborhood yak and beefalos.

In other pre-Easter news, we dyed eggs today.  Camper seemed to have tons of fun, we caught him post nap, post bottle, and he sat in his high chair and squeeled with delight as we dipped the eggs into the cups filled with vinegar water and dye.  We watched The Ten Commandments for awhile, one of my Easter favorites.  I used to love the costumes, and remember wrapping myself up in my grandparents curtains trying to look like this:

With all the cinematic excitement, I didn’t really know how to tell Camper about Easter, so I just matter of factly told him that we celebrate Easter because Jesus died for us and lived again, and to remember His Atonement.  I also told him that I’ve heard stories of a bunny who leaves presents, fun new things that remind us of spring and new life.  And then he bit me, I changed him into a nighttime diaper, and he went to sleep.  All in all, I think Easter Eve was a success.

His “basket” is actually a large plastic tub, containing another, smaller, carrot-shaped basket that my Mom got him at Hallmark (in honor of his favorite veggie), and all the other presents I’ve collected since Christmas.  Everything that anyone sent went in there, and I added the candy John and I chose as our favorites (some of it sent by very helpful friends), and I think we have the makings of a joyful basket.  I hope he’s interested in digging into it!  He digs into everything else, why not?  Right?

Happy Easter Eve :)

Outline of New Life Thus Far

Thursday, December 25th, 2008

Friday- Left Provo, accompanied by The All American Rejects “Gives You Hell.”  Camper slept all day, was up during the evening, slept all night in a beautiful hotel (in bed with Mommy and Daddy) with a morning breakfast buffet consisting of many wonderful sausages and yummy eggs.  And good juice.  And lots of skiers.  Sleeping place: Veil, CO.  Said goodbye to the beautiful western mountains.

Saturday- Left CO, drove over scariest mountain summit of life so far.  Super serious weather demanding super skilled winter driving and use of the Subaru’s Sport Shifting.  All drivers and passengers handled it like champs.   Long day of driving, much catching up with my Auntie.  Camper slept all morning, was awake all evening, and then slept all night in a so-so hotel in bed with Mommy.  No king beds available, so we split up.   Breakfast was disappointing. Sleeping place: Salina, KS.

Sunday- Coldest day of the whole trip.  Temperatures so low it hurt to pump gas, lots of wind through KS.  I recall a nice lunch in a Subway…unless that was Monday. Still no snow!  More bonding with my Auntie (taking turns driving while John and Jon were in the moving truck), Camper slept all morning, was awake in the evening, and slept all night in a rather interesting hotel that seemed pretty fancy, was super-affordable…and turned out to be a windy death trap with door 4 frozen shut.  More on THAT later.  Sleeping place: Terra Haute, IN.

Monday- Decided to GO FOR IT.  Had a really good meal at a Cracker Barrel and then just DROVE.  No hotel that night! More quality time with my Auntie ending in hilarity as everyone in both cars quickly got uber tired.  Went through good old Scranton, although it was too late to stop and visit.  Arrived home around 5am after missing our exit and going through Connecticut by accident.  Everyone did the bare minimum upacking the cars to allow ourselves to fall into bed and sleep for a couple of hours.  Sleeping place: HOME.

Tuesday- Slept, ran errands, sat around like zombies.

Wednesday- Unloaded truck and returned it.  Worked on unpacking.

Today- CHRISTMAS! Wonderful day in which Camper got more presents than anyone else, and we all loved it.  Worked on unpacking a bit more, but mostly just rested and visited.  Oh yeah.  And napped.  Napping was good.

So those were the bare bones of our trip.  I’m sure I’ll update more on the way it was easiest to travel with Camper…keeping a 7 to 7 schedule and hitting a hotel before his bedtime, or the things Auntie and I got to talk about and how amazing it was to get time away from the world with her and just spend time together, or about how hysterical things got in Wilkes Barre with my brother saying he was going to call the cops on my Aunt who was loitering outside a gas station or how fun it was to talk over walkie talkies the whole trip….but I’m tired.  John is tired.  There is still so much to do, we’re just glad to be here and settling into our newest phase of life.  I’ve been forgetting to check my cell phone and taking naps with Bubby whenever he falls asleep and eating lots of good food.  Tomorrow it’ll be back to real life, cleaning and organzing and more job applications for both me and John, I’m sure.  But for now we’re just chillin’, enjoying the holidy.

Merry Christmas everyone, hope it was a good one!

Auntie, if you remember anything I need to write about, just leave it in the comments, I’ll work on the long post/recap later.  With pictures!
